Our story
Built on decades of trust
Richard E. Ehlers, M.D. moved to Yakima in 1986 and established his practice of ophthalmology where he laid the foundation for advanced ophthalmic care in the region. To provide more comprehensive eye care for this growing community, The Eye Center was built and dedicated in 2004. This new facility allowed us to provide state of the art diagnostic and surgical services. Our team expanded with the addition of Benito Jaramillo, O.D. providing expert medical optometry care.
In 2010, W. Michael Stapleton, M.D. , joined our team, bringing expertise in the medical and surgical management of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal disease and oculoplastic conditions. Together, Dr. Ehlers and Dr. Stapleton have performed more that 50,000 surgical procedures and have treated an even greater number of patients with a wide range of ophthalmic diseases.
We are now the only full-time ophthalmologists in the Yakima Valley, dedicated to serving our community with the highest standards of surgical and clinical expertise.

Our staff
Meet Your Care Team
Our care team includes board-certified ophthalmologists, an optometry professional, and experienced staff working together to provide thoughtful, coordinated eye care at every stage of your visit.
Richard E. Ehlers, M.D.
Trained extensively in eye diseases and specializes in cataract surgery and treatment of glaucoma. He is an expert in laser surgery and treatment of diabetic eye diseases.
W. Michael Stapleton, M.D.
Specializes in the surgery of cataracts, pterygium, and eyelid pathology. Dr. Stapleton is an expert in the diagnosis and management of age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
Ben Jaramillo, OD.
Provides comprehensive medical optometric care, specializing in ocular disease management, cataract evaluation, glaucoma diagnosis, and corneal, retinal, and diabetic eye conditions.
Kristen John
Combines years of ophthalmology experience with leadership and organizational expertise to support patient-centered care.
Jessica Ellenberger
Brings extensive expertise in eye care, guiding her team and delivering outstanding service to patients.
Debbie Ehlers, MSN, BSN, RN
A nationally recognized ophthalmic nurse, Debbie blends clinical excellence with genuine compassion to support patients at every stage of care.
